It’s rare that I’m in a situation in which I need to hail a ride. At home, I own a car.. at work, we rent one in whatever city we’re in or our transportation is arranged for us. So when the situation presented itself that I needed to find my way to Los Angeles’ Union Station (I didn’t want to park my car there for the night) I thought this was the perfect opportunity to try Uber, an app which locates, books and sends a black towncar to your location.
The app is beautifully designed. The interface, the website, everything.. but as we all know you cannot judge a book by its cover. I bought a LivingSocial deal for $2 which provided me with $20 to use with Uber. What I didn’t know was because I purchased the LivingSocial deal I no longer qualified for any of the discounts and free-rides provided by the app for first time users. There are codes out there to get $20 for FREE for new customers. Granted, I only paid $2, but folks out there are signing up and getting $20 without paying anything. Also any $10/off coupons or such like that are not valid if you’ve bought a LivingSocial deal or anything of the sort.
That hiccup aside, I still decided to use the app. I don’t live far from Union Station, probably, 15 minutes away. I wanted to be at the station by 12:00pm so I opened the app, logged in and requested a car meet my GPS location. Immediately the app informed me that my driver, Hovo, was 12 minutes away.
The app had actually told me he was still driving up my block, but I was waiting out front and he was already there in a brand new Lincoln Town-car. After our hellos, he asked where I was going – he plugged it into his GPS and we were on our way. He had the armest in the back of the car down with two complimentary water bottles pre-placed for me.
Once we arrived at the train station, I just got out! That’s it! I had set up my Uber account to automatically charge 20% tip on top of the bill, and it emailed me a receipt as I was grabbing my belongings to get out of the car.
The cost of my trip, with tip was $22. Probably a bit pricer than a cab would be.. but I didn’t have to call for a cab, hail one (can you even do that in LA?), the car was brand new, the driver was nice and I didn’t need cash, didn’t have to sign a piece of paper or go through the credit card processing procedure.. I just got out of the car.
I would definitely use the app in the future for short trips to get around the neighborhood or to the airport. They have set rates for that. If you’re interested in giving Uber a try you can sign up by clicking here and you’ll receive a $10 credit.
